Marshals

"The Yellowstone is gone. Same for most of my family. And as for vengeance, the day is still young."

Now Airing on CBS

Sundays at 8:00 PM ET/PT on CBS. Kayce Dutton's story continues after catastrophic losses on the Yellowstone ranch.

1. "The Yellowstone is Gone": Trailer & Plot Revelations

The explosive January 23 trailer for the newly retitled "Marshals" (CBS dropped the "Y:" from the official name but retained the logo styling) revealed staggering bombshells for the Yellowstone universe. Most notably, the flagship ranch is no more.

When asked by Brett Cullen’s character (Harry Gifford, head of the U.S. Marshals in Montana) if he possesses a "Dutton agenda" for vengeance, Kayce delivers a chilling response: "The Yellowstone is gone. Same for most of my family. And as for vengeance, the day is still young."

Perhaps even more tragically, the trailer heavily implies the death of Kayce's wife, Monica. Viewers see an Indigenous nurse covering a dead body in Kayce’s East Camp home alongside tables littered with medication, while Kayce laments: "My family’s had this land for almost 150 years. The only thing I ever wanted was taken from me." Kelsey Asbille (Monica) has noticeably been absent from all casting announcements.

2. Kayce Dutton's Reluctant Return

Surprisingly, even Luke Grimes didn’t expect a spinoff. Four months after filming the Yellowstone finale, Grimes believed Kayce and his family’s storyline was left in a place of "completeness and peace." However, the prospect of Kayce serving as a U.S. Marshal presented an undeniable hook.

“If it was just like, ‘well, he’s happy’ — we’re just going to watch him be happy? That’s not very cool," Grimes shared with People. Combining Kayce's elite Navy SEAL background with federal law enforcement across Montana's unforgiving frontier gives the character a profound, action-heavy new trajectory driven by loss.

3. A Massive Ensemble: Returning Stars and New Recruits

Marshals bridges the gap between the original series and its standalone future by importing key players from Broken Rock. Gil Birmingham (Thomas Rainwater), Mo Brings Plenty (Mo), and Brecken Merrill (Tate Dutton) are confirmed to return, suggesting that tribal land jurisdiction will play a major role in the new federal crimes Kayce investigates.

They are joined by a powerhouse cast of new series regulars including Logan Marshall-Green, Arielle Kebbel (as Belle), Ash Santos (as Andrea), and Tatanka Means (as Miles). Adding further authentic Western flair, Country star Riley Green makes his highly-anticipated acting debut in the series.

4. Behind the Camera: Spencer Hudnut Takes the Reins

While Taylor Sheridan remains the co-creator and executive producer, he has handed the day-to-day showrunner duties over to Spencer Hudnut. Hudnut's background is particularly fitting for a show centered on Kayce Dutton.

As the former showrunner for CBS’s heavily tactical "SEAL Team", Hudnut possesses a deep understanding of writing characters with military backgrounds struggling to adapt to civilian and law enforcement life. This ensures Marshals will balance high-octane procedural action with the emotional trauma Yellowstone fans expect.

5. CBS Sunday Blockbuster: Premiere Strategy

Paramount is betting massive linear television numbers on Marshals. The series is confirmed to premiere on Sunday, March 1, at 8:00 PM EST directly on the CBS network.

Strategically sandwiched in CBS’s powerhouse Sunday primetime schedule—airing immediately after the legendary "60 Minutes" and serving as the direct lead-in for "Tracker" (the #1 Series)—Marshals is positioned to be a massive ratings juggernaut before ultimately migrating to its permanent streaming home on Paramount+.
