The last Dutton still standing in Montana. A former Navy SEAL and Livestock Commissioner, Kayce joins the U.S. Marshals after the Yellowstone ranch is gone and Monica is dead, raising Tate alone while chasing federal cases across the state. The ranch itself was sold to the Broken Rock Reservation, honouring John Dutton's final wishes rather than leaving the land to developers — which is why Kayce keeps ending up in the same rooms as Thomas Rainwater.

Grimes played Kayce for all five seasons of Yellowstone, six years with the character before carrying this spinoff as its lead. Outside the franchise he has appeared in American Sniper, Fifty Shades of Grey and The Magnificent Seven, and he released his debut country album in 2024.

Grimes nearly turned the spinoff down. "I was really on the fence," he has said, believing Kayce's arc had been wrapped up satisfactorily by the Yellowstone finale. It took a direct call from Taylor Sheridan — who told him he wanted Marshals to "take wings on its own" — to change his mind.

Played by Logan Marshall-Green

Pete "Cal" Calvin

Leader of the elite tactical unit and Kayce's former commanding officer from their Navy SEAL days — he is the one who recruits Kayce, recognising that his old friend needs a purpose after Monica's death and that the team needs a door-kicker with his skill set. Cal converts grief into operational clarity, hides a cancer diagnosis from the team for most of the season, and his clash with Kayce over tactics drives the Episode 11 cliffhanger.

A Charleston, South Carolina native with an MFA from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts. His credits include Prometheus, Upgrade, The Invitation, Spider-Man: Homecoming (as the Shocker), and the series 24, The O.C. and Quarry. He made his directorial debut with 2019's Adopt a Highway, starring Ethan Hawke.

Marshall-Green was cast just weeks before filming began and trained with ex-SEAL consultant Ryan Sangster on weapon handling and tactical choreography. He has said he took the role deliberately to honour military veterans: "Pete's character arc explores the aftermath of war." He tells Belle about the diagnosis in Episode 12, "The Devil at Home."

Belle Skinner

Played by Arielle Kebbel

The unit's undercover specialist and Kayce's most trusted teammate — a former undercover operative with the ATF, and an accomplished equestrian from a renowned family of Montana cutting horse breeders. She asks Kayce to keep quiet when he recognises her surname in the premiere; the reason surfaces in Episode 10, when her estranged mother Samantha is revealed among a group of escaped prisoners, imprisoned for negligent homicide after a mining disaster.

Born in Winter Park, Florida, Kebbel began as a model before turning to acting in 2003. Her television work includes Gilmore Girls, The Vampire Diaries, 90210, Ballers and Rescue: HI-Surf; her films include John Tucker Must Die, The Grudge 2, Fifty Shades Freed and the After series.

Her casting was almost accidental: Kebbel discovered her neighbour was Martha Higareda, then working on another Taylor Sheridan project, and sent showrunner Spencer Hudnut a photo of the two of them riding horses together. Her Episode 6 infiltration of the Iron Sentinels is the season's longest undercover sequence.

Andrea Cruz

Played by Ash Santos

A former NYPD manhunter from the Bronx, dropped into the Montana wilderness about as far from her comfort zone as the map allows. She brings big-city tactics to a team that works remote, rugged terrain — in the premiere she flatly refuses to get on a horse, then is riding one through open country minutes later. Her kidnapping by Randall Clegg turns the season's revenge campaign personal, and her rescue from his fortified farm in Episode 9 becomes a livestreamed public spectacle.

Santos has appeared in American Horror Story: Apocalypse, Mayor of Kingstown — another Taylor Sheridan series — and the vampire film Night Teeth alongside Sydney Sweeney and Megan Fox. Marshals is her first main role in a major series.

The part arrived right after her Netflix series Pulse was cancelled following one season. "Andrea came to me at a time when I needed her the most," Santos has said of the role. Andrea is taken in Episode 8, "Blowback," and the standoff resolves in Episode 9.

Miles Kittle

Played by Tatanka Means

A former Broken Rock Reservation police officer and Marine Corps veteran, Miles brings an insider's reading of tribal land and politics to a unit that constantly runs into the seam between federal, state and tribal jurisdiction. He is also the Marshal most willing to go off-book: he pushes the team into the MMIW trafficking case in Episode 5 and goes rogue in Episode 12 to hunt down a trafficker on the reservation.

Tatanka Wanbli Sapa Xila Sabe Means, born February 19, 1985, is of Oglala Lakota, Omaha, Yankton Dakota and Diné descent, and the son of the late activist and actor Russell Means. He appeared as John Wren in Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon and in Kevin Costner's Horizon: An American Saga, plus The Son, Tiger Eyes (alongside his father) and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials.

Means is also a working stand-up comedian and the founder of Tatanka Clothing, a line built around cultural awareness for Native people and Native business. He was named American Indian Business Leaders Entrepreneur of the Year in 2011. His rogue move in Episode 12 is one of the threads carried directly into Season 2.

Garrett

Played by Riley Green

A former Navy SEAL teammate of Kayce and Cal who arrives carrying combat trauma and unresolved history with Cal, putting Kayce in the middle of another painful past. In Episode 10 he runs into a burning barn to free trapped horses, succeeds, and ends the episode hospitalised with severe second-degree burns and significant smoke damage to his lungs.

Green is a country music star making his acting debut with this series.

His survival is left uncertain at the end of "Playing with Fire."

Harry Gifford

Played by Brett Cullen

Chief Deputy U.S. Marshal for Montana, Pete Calvin's superior officer and the man who signs off on hiring Kayce. He is the one who asks whether Kayce is carrying a "Dutton agenda" for vengeance — the question the whole season answers.

Returning from Yellowstone

A veteran character actor whose credits span Apollo 13, Joker, The Dark Knight Rises, the Friday Night Lights film, Lost and Person of Interest.

His trailer exchange with Kayce became the show's most-quoted scene.

Thomas Rainwater

Played by Gil Birmingham

Chairman of the Broken Rock Reservation and, as of the Yellowstone finale, owner of the former Dutton ranch — bought for the symbolic price of $1.25 per acre. That purchase is why tribal land jurisdiction shapes so many of the federal cases Kayce works, and an assassination attempt on Rainwater drives the Season 1 finale.

Returning from Yellowstone

Birmingham played Rainwater across all five Yellowstone seasons. His wider career includes Twilight, Hell or High Water and Wind River — the last another Taylor Sheridan project.

The finale, "Wolves at the Door," puts Kayce between Rainwater and an incoming militia.

Mo

Played by Mo Brings Plenty

Rainwater's trusted friend, adviser and head of reservation security, and one of the few people who has known Kayce since before the Dutton collapse. Across Yellowstone he was the bridge between the reservation and the Dutton family; here he plays the same role between Broken Rock and the Marshals unit.

Returning from Yellowstone

Beyond acting, Brings Plenty is an accomplished horseman, traditional dancer and cultural educator, and serves as an Indigenous cultural adviser across the Yellowstone universe.

He reprises the role he originated in Yellowstone Season 1, and continues to look out for both Kayce and Tate after Monica's death.

Tate Dutton

Played by Brecken Merrill

Kayce and Monica's son, now a teenager and the only family Kayce has left. Tate is working through his mother's death while trying to understand why his father chose a job that keeps him in danger — and in Episode 5 it is Tate who spots a missing classmate at a gas station, triggering the trafficking investigation.

Merrill was 10 years old when Yellowstone premiered in 2018 and has effectively grown up on screen in the role. Now 17, he brings a markedly different register to Tate.

Tate is the emotional anchor of Kayce's post-ranch life at East Camp, and the father-son dynamic is one of the show's longest-running threads.

Dolly Weaver

Played by Ellyn Jameson

A recurring character whose specifics the production has kept deliberately quiet. Given the show's footing in Montana communities and federal casework, Dolly sits somewhere between local contact and case-adjacent civilian.
