The Dutton who came out the other side. After the Yellowstone ranch was sold, Beth and Rip started again in Rio Paloma, Texas — which means the financier who once fought developers from a Montana boardroom is now fighting a neighbouring ranch dynasty with 190 years of local standing. Her first real ally in town is a veterinarian she talks out of putting down an injured horse.

Foreman of the Yellowstone for five seasons, now running his own outfit for the first time. Rip hires local — Azul Ramos on a recommendation, then Zachariah Moss straight out of prison — and builds the new place around the same bunkhouse code that held the old one together. By the finale he is loading weapons to defend it.

The orphan Beth took in during Yellowstone, now nineteen and in a South Texas high school. Season 1 is a brutal coming-of-age: he falls for Oreana Lynn Jackson, is arrested defending her at a rodeo, witnesses Sheriff Wade murder old rancher Dwight White, says "I love you" too early, spirals into vandalism, and walks off the ranch in Episode 8.

Matriarch of the 10 Petal Ranch, 190 years in her family and the reason her name opens doors across the county. The charm is real and so is what it covers: in 1981 she killed a cowboy named Luke who had sexually assaulted her, and Mariano Reyes was the only witness. She suffers a heart attack at the ranch’s 190th anniversary celebration, having just named her volatile son Rob-Will as her heir.

A Vietnam War Navy veteran who became a veterinarian, and the first person in Rio Paloma to take Beth Dutton seriously. He meets her when she talks him into saving an injured horse instead of euthanising it, later works as a field medic on Joaquin’s gunshot wound, falls for Beulah Jackson, and turns up with his own rifle to defend the Dutton ranch in the Season 1 finale.

Beulah’s adopted eldest son and the fixer who keeps the Jackson empire standing. He is the biological son of Mariano Reyes, a former 10 Petal ranch hand — a parentage that puts him between two families rather than inside either. He spends the season covering for his brother Rob-Will’s escalating crimes, until a betrayal from inside the family nearly kills him.

Beulah’s volatile younger son and foreman of the 10 Petal Ranch, named heir at the 190th anniversary party moments before his mother collapses. Drug use, paranoia and escalating violence make him the most unpredictable force of the season: he murders ranch foreman Wes, then orchestrates an assassination attempt on his own adopted brother.

Joaquin’s biological father, a former 10 Petal ranch hand, and the hidden power behind the ranch’s illegal cattle smuggling operation. He is first heard only as a voice on the phone in Episode 3. He is the sole witness to Beulah’s 1981 killing, and the Mexican cattle pipeline he controls is what brought the foot-and-mouth outbreak into the Dutton herd. The Season 1 finale is titled "El Padrino" — The Godfather — and it is about him.

Rob-Will’s daughter and Beulah’s granddaughter, twenty-four years old and the one the 10 Petal Ranch is meant to pass to. She is drawn instead to nineteen-year-old Carter Green, and their romance runs across all nine episodes while both families move toward open war.
