Landman

West Texas oil, told with the same land-and-legacy grammar as Yellowstone.

Sheridan's credit: Co-creator, Writer, Executive producer

Quick answer

Landman is Taylor Sheridan's West Texas oil drama for Paramount+, co-created with journalist Christian Wallace and starring Billy Bob Thornton as crisis-manager Tommy Norris. Two seasons have aired; a third is confirmed but is not expected before 2027.

What Landman Is

Landman moved Sheridan from Montana grass to Permian Basin caliche without changing the underlying question: who actually controls the land, and what does holding it cost the family standing on top of it. Billy Bob Thornton plays Tommy Norris, the fixer who negotiates leases, calms widows, and cleans up blowouts for an oil company that would rather not know how the work gets done.

The series grew out of the Texas Monthly podcast Boomtown, reported by Christian Wallace, who co-created the show with Sheridan. That reporting spine is what gives Landman its documentary streak — the rig-floor procedure, the royalty math, the roughneck economics are drawn from real fieldwork rather than invented for television.

Season 1 ran from November 2024 into January 2025 and built to the death of oil magnate Monty Miller (Jon Hamm), which handed the company to his widow Cami (Demi Moore). Season 2 premiered in November 2025 and closed on 18 January 2026 with "Tragedy and Flies", pushing Tommy further into the ownership side of the business he spent a career serving.

Paramount+ renewed the show for a third season, but production slid from a planned May 2026 start to August, which realistically puts new episodes in 2027 rather than this year. Nothing has been dated officially.

Season by Season

SeasonAiredWhat happens
Season 1Nov 17, 2024 – Jan 12, 2025Tommy Norris manages one disaster after another for M-Tex Oil; ends with Monty Miller's death.
Season 2Nov 16, 2025 – Jan 18, 2026Cami Miller runs the company, Sam Elliott joins the cast, and the finale "Tragedy and Flies" resets the Norris family.
Season 3Filming from August 2026Renewed. The delayed production start makes a 2027 premiere more likely than a 2026 one.

Why Yellowstone Fans Should Care

Landman is the clearest example of the Sheridan formula transplanted out of the Yellowstone universe: a family business that doubles as an inheritance fight, a patriarch whose competence is also his curse, and an industry filmed like a landscape. If the ranch-politics half of Yellowstone is what hooked you — the meetings, the leverage, the land deals — Landman is the closest match in his catalogue.

The casting overlaps too. Sam Elliott, the trail boss Shea Brennan of 1883, joined the cast in Season 2, and the show shoots in the same Fort Worth orbit as Sheridan's Texas productions. It shares no characters or continuity with the Duttons — Landman is a separate world, not a spinoff.

Landman FAQ

Is Landman connected to Yellowstone?

No. Landman shares a creator, a Texas production base and several cast members with the Yellowstone universe, but no characters, timeline or continuity. It is a standalone series.

Is Landman based on a true story?

It is based on Boomtown, a Texas Monthly podcast reported by Christian Wallace about the Permian Basin oil boom. The characters are fictional; the industry detail is reported.

When does Landman Season 3 come out?

No premiere date has been announced. Filming was pushed from May to August 2026, which makes a 2027 release the realistic expectation.

Where can I watch Landman?

All episodes stream on Paramount+.

Not a Yellowstone Spinoff

Landman shares a creator with the Dutton saga, not a timeline. If you came looking for the ranch, the full universe guide — eight series, one family tree — is a click away.
