Taylor Sheridan's Yellowstone universe is built on a body count. From the wagon train of 1883 to the cartel war of Dutton Ranch, almost every major turning point is a death — and most of them reshape who controls the ranch.
This is a show-by-show list of the deaths that matter: named characters, how they died, who was responsible, and roughly when. It skips the countless unnamed outlaws, hitmen and militia. For a single death in detail, follow the links to our dedicated pages.

Which Duttons Are Still Alive?
As of the 2026 shows: Beth Dutton, Rip Wheeler, Kayce Dutton, Tate Dutton and Carter are alive, and Jacob and Cara Dutton end 1923 still holding the ranch. Spencer Dutton survives 1923 but has died by the time Yellowstone begins.
The bloodline that reaches the modern show runs through Elsa's younger brother: Spencer Dutton → John Dutton II → John Dutton III → Kayce and Tate. Jacob and Cara raised Spencer and his brother John Sr. but had no children of their own, and John Sr.'s branch ended in 1923 when his son Jack was killed.
