The Journey West

The Founding of the Ranch
Paradise Valley, Montana - 1884
After Elsa was struck by a poisoned Lakota arrow in Wyoming, the family knew she wouldn't survive. Rather than bury her on the trail, James pushed forward to find a place worthy of her final rest.
When they reached Paradise Valley in Montana—a breathtaking landscape surrounded by mountains—Elsa used her final breaths to tell her father: "This is the place, Papa. This is where we're meant to be."
James buried his daughter and claimed the land, vowing that the Dutton family would protect it for seven generations. That promise would be fulfilled 140 years later with Tate Dutton.
